In the field linguistics, DCT is one of the most effective tools to study the behavior of communication learners. It can be used to study many issues, such as the manner of speaking, turn-taking and lexical choices. It can be used to assess phonological complexity in learners speaking. A recent study utilized an DCT to assess EFL students' refusal skills. The participants were given a list of scenarios and were required to choose a suitable response from the options offered. The authors found that the DCT was more efficient than other methods of refusal, including a questionnaire and video recordings. Participants were 46 CLKs with upper-intermediate proficiency who gave responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked for reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results showed that CLKs often chose to reject native Korean pragmatism norms. Their decisions were influenced primarily by four factors that included their personalities and multilingual identities, their current lives and their relationship affordances. These findings have implications for L2 Korean assessment and teaching. The MQ data were analysed to identify the participants' choices in terms of their pragmatics. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)'s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, the responses were matched with their linguistic performance in the DCTs to determine whether they reflected pragmatic resistance or not. In addition, the interviewees were asked to explain their choices of behavior in a specific situation. The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and Z-tests. It was found that CLKs often resorted to phrases like “sorry” and “thank you.” This could be due to their lack of familiarity with the target language, which led to an insufficient understanding of korea pragmatic norms. The results revealed that CLKs' preferences for either converging to L1 norms or dissociating from both L1 and L2 pragmatic norms differed based on the DCT situations. Refusal Interviews One of the major questions in pragmatic research is why learners decide to rescind native-speaker pragmatic norms. A recent study sought to answer this question by using a variety of experimental tools, including DCTs, MQs and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. additional resources were required to complete the DCTs in their first language and to complete the MQs either in their L1 or their L2. Then, they were invited to a RI where they were asked to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations. The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in more than 40% of their answers. They did so even though they could create native-like patterns. In addition, they were aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their choice to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors, such as relationships and affordances. For instance, they outlined how their relationships with professors facilitated more relaxed performance in regards to the intercultural and linguistic norms of their university. The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or consequences they could face in the event that their local social norms were violated. They were worried that their local friends might think they are “foreigners” and believe that they are not intelligent. This concern was similar in nature to that expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009). These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are no longer the preferred choice of Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests. Future researchers should reconsider the validity of these tests in different cultural contexts and specific situations. This will enable them to better understand how different cultural environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of L2 learners in the classroom and beyond.
